A career objective covers all the bases when it comes to writing a resume. A career objective is essentially the whole pitch of the resume and talks about your career objective and what the future aims of the career are. It’s a vital piece of data for the potential employer and a goodly written objective can catch the recruiter’s eye. So why write a career objective?
One of the main reasons to form a career objective in your CV or cover letter is so that you can tell the prospective employer exactly what you’re after. You can mention these goals at the beginning of the CV or letter or you can work them into the letter or CV as well. You must make sure that these goals are relevant and in line with the position you’re seeking. If you’re seeking employment within a marketing department then your goals should be geared towards marketing and selling. If you’re seeking employment within a creative department then your goals should be more around writing and creating.
When making the career objective statement, it’s a good idea to make sure that they are written in a positive manner. Make sure they are clear, precise and very specific. If you have your heart set on working in a marketing department, write it like this: I want to work in a marketing department. A good objective statement will allow you to focus on the skills you have as a potential applicant. For example: I’m a good writer who would like to seek out opportunities within a marketing department.
Your career objective doesn’t need to be a long one – it can be as short as one sentence to three sentences. However, if you can afford to include some supporting details in the objective you should do so. Three sentences should suffice – the rest of the statement can be filled in by you, depending on how the hiring manager reads things. For example: I am currently seeking a marketing position within a brand name department.
These three sentences can sum up your career objectives nicely. You can use them to list the responsibilities you’ll have if you’re applying for different positions. If you’re looking for a technical position, you may have to list your qualifications for a number of different jobs. For example: I am seeking to become a technical writer/article writer/designer/programmer. If you have a lot of customer service skills listed then you can probably expect to be hired as a customer service specialist.
The career objective statement and the career summary should be used in conjunction with each other. It should be obvious to the reader that what you’re trying to achieve is to attain a certain level within a company. Use the objective statement to outline your career objectives. Then use the career summary to describe the skills you need to have in order to meet those goals. You want to highlight all skills that are related to the job description.
You can use your CVs to convince a recruiter that you have all of the qualities needed to meet their desired qualifications. They don’t have to accept you just because of your CVs though. Show them that you’ve done the work to obtain the qualifications listed on them. Explain to the recruiter what you learned from reading the CVs, taking notes, doing internships and so on. Remember, they have to make a decision about whether or not you’re qualified based on your CV alone.
Be careful not to use your career objective as an opportunity to leave out any of the other information. A recruiter isn’t interested in what your objection might be. They want someone who has the right skills for the job. So put any other information on your CV that is relevant and significant to the job. Otherwise, they’ll take your CV as a waste of space and your chances of getting the job will decrease!
