A resume outline is basically a road map for your resume which outlines where you will list your various qualifications, skills and experience for the particular job you are applying for. An outline gives you a starting point to work from and enables you to see exactly what information you will have to include in your resume. It also helps you organize your thoughts and determine exactly how your resume should look and what specific information will be of interest to your potential employer. In order to ensure your resume outline works effectively you must follow certain basic guidelines. Follow these guidelines and you are sure to achieve an effective resume.
Your resume outline will consist of four primary sections, and they are aptly named because they will represent key sections of your resume. These sections are quite simply to make sense of: your personal profile, your education and work history, your skills, and your contact information. Your contact information should be detailed and easily accessible. However, do not list your contact information under your career summary or your job history unless your contact information is needed for one of the sections in your resume outline.
The Personal Profile will be the most important segment of your resume outline. Here you will want to highlight any relevant personal traits that you possess. Also include in this section your educational background, relevant volunteer experience and other skills that will be helpful to your new employer. This segment is best to list things you would like to emphasize. For example, if you are applying for a teaching position then highlighting your abilities as a teacher would be appropriate. Similarly, if you are applying as a volunteer for a national organization then including relevant volunteering experiences would be appropriate.
Another important part of a resume outline is the chronological portion which lists your chronological qualifications. chronological positions listed in your resume outline will be most effective when used with a functional resume format. Functional resumes emphasize your abilities, achievements and work history instead of chronological information. Therefore, listing all your chronological qualifications will just clutter up your resume and do not bring any relevant results to the employer.
In a functional resume outline, it is important to provide your contact information at the top of the page. In chronological resumes this is usually the top left corner. However, in a graphic designer position your contact information should be at the top right corner. If your skills involve art work then your contact information should be at the top left-hand corner. Again, you would not want to list your contact information at the bottom of the page. Instead, list them in the order of relevance under your graphic designer position title.
When preparing your resume outline, it is also important to make sure you use the proper format for your profile, career goals, and educational background/courses. Make sure to organize these sections accordingly so that your resume flows well and clearly. First of all, always list your skill sets, especially your skill sets relating to the specific job you are applying for. Next, always include your education, especially your formal education and other technical schools or college as well as community college or vocational school.
The next thing you should do is to organize your career goals. This is the most important part of your resume outline, because it will allow recruiters to easily locate you when they are doing the initial job search. Under your career goals, you should list your ideal occupation, the positions you aspire to fill, and the goals you hope to achieve throughout your employment and career. Next, arrange your career summary of skills under the appropriate career section. Finally, make sure to place the appropriate contact information (ails, etc.)
If you are currently in the process of writing your resume, one useful way to organize your content is to create a rough draft or “barebone” resume outline. This outline may serve as the initial framework for your resume, but is not considered to be a final product. The outline serves as a foundation for all of your content, but the final product is what will entice recruiters to read your resume.
