How To Set Your Career Goals

What exactly is a career goal? A career goal is a concise, well-defined statement describing the career path an individual plans to pursue during his career. It’s critical for each student or job aspirant to clearly define their career goals before embarking on the journey towards success. While many people are driven by dreams of making it big in their chosen career, others are simply seeking a job that meets their needs and is also fulfilling. With so many choices available, how does someone know what they want to do with their life? And how can one know what they will be doing in ten or twenty years’ time?

Here are three simple steps for creating long-term career goals. They may not give you a clear picture of your future, but these steps will lay the groundwork for a successful career. And if you keep these basic steps in mind, you can develop additional steps as necessary. Follow these three steps, and you will be well on your way to a satisfying career, whatever form it takes.

The first step in defining your career goals is assessing your personality traits and characteristics. Write down all of the skills you have, as well as any other talents you possess that are currently relevant to your career. You may also want to think about areas that are not as relevant, but are nonetheless important to you. Write down these abilities and qualities on a piece of paper. Assess them on a scale of one to four, where one represents the most significant aspect of your skills and abilities, and four represents the least significant.

The next step in setting your career goals is to determine your career path. In general, you would want to begin at the lowest rung of your desired career path, and work your way up in order to meet your career goals. If your highest career goal is working for the government, then you would probably start at the lowest rung and work your way up to being a career foreign service officer. However, this example is simply an illustration, and the steps involved may vary depending on your actual job goal. For example, if you want to become a teacher, you would not start at the bottom rung and work your way up to becoming a principal or dean of a classroom.

The third step in setting your career goals involves actually determining how to pursue your career goals. You would want to take stock of your strengths, your skills, your personal interests, your motivation level, and your overall well-being. You may also need to consider your relationships. Are you looking for a job that allows for more than one person to work closely with you, in a co-workers, boss, or mentor type of environment?

Once you have your career goals, write them down and distribute to people who will help you achieve them. Even if you are the only one considering them, it can be helpful to send them to a few hiring managers or department heads to give them a realistic look as to what you hope to accomplish. Ask each person you give this document to review it with you and let them know your goals. You may need to provide additional guidance to make sure they are taking them seriously.

Once you have shared your career goals with others, you should also develop plans to achieve them. You would probably spend a significant amount of time working on the plans to achieve them, especially if you are trying to change departments. You need to set specific goals for each department or position you are trying to enter. This will keep you motivated to work hard on your objectives. The reality is that sometimes it takes several years to move from your entry level position to the career you really desire.

These three steps are the heart of career goals. Although there are many different ways to attain them, all of them require that you take small steps. They also require that you plan long-term strategies that will allow you to reach your short-term goals and then turn your attention to the long-term goal. These steps will ensure that you stay motivated, excited about moving forward and prepared to make the changes necessary to reach your desired career goals. If you take these steps you will find that your career will be more successful.
