A resume objective is a brief paragraph usually included at the very top of an otherwise lengthy resume. Not to be mistaken with an executive summary, the objective is used far less frequently because of its many inherent drawbacks. But at the right time and place, the once popular objective statement has still its own significant purpose. For example, when writing a resume for an entry-level position, the objective can act as a guideline by which the reader can approximate the exact job description. It acts as a “what,” “when,” “where,” and “why” of the job search.

When applying for higher positions, however, it’s far more advisable to utilize objective statements throughout the resume to create far more descriptive sentences. The basic idea behind these sentences is to provide information that will direct the reader to the appropriate sections of the resume. For example, if you’re applying for a teaching position, you’ll want to use a different format (and set of words) than if you’re applying for a position in sales. So here are some resume objective examples you can use as a guide.

Marketing coordinator – This kind of resume objective sentence is almost always included in resumes seeking candidates in a digital marketing department or public relations specialist-type job. The job description will inevitably describe how the individual will manage the marketing or public relations aspect of a company. In this type of position, it is important for the candidate to display the ability to effectively coordinate all aspects of a company’s communications. In addition, this sentence can also highlight previous work experience in a similar capacity. For example, if you have worked as a public relations specialist for a small magazine, you may be best suited for a marketing coordinator position at a large company.

Human Resources Manager – A typical resume objective statement for a Human Resources Manager will most likely describe the job applicant’s leadership skills and her knowledge of employee relations and hiring practices. These types of managers are often involved in negotiating employee benefits and managing staffing requirements. In addition, they make final decisions about compensation. The resume objective should clearly describe the skills required for this position.

Technology Manager – This type of resume objective sentence is very specific. It typically describes an applicant’s recent work history. The specific details include how long the candidate has held a particular job title, where in the company the position is, how long someone with this title has worked at the organization and what technology expertise they have gained during their employment. While technology experience is highly desirable, specific technology experience is even more crucial for this job. Hiring managers are always looking for a diverse range of technology skills.

Marketing Manager – This type of resume objective makes reference to a specific skill set. The purpose of this section is to provide a summary of a candidate’s work history. This section does not contain a detailed description of skills or capabilities. Instead, it describes one or two key abilities that are desired by the hiring manager. The ability to communicate and develop a marketing plan is critical to this role.

Financial Manager – A financial objective statement for a Financial Manager highlights a candidate’s ability to effectively manage money. This section contains a few bullet points to present a specific track record of each of the key financial responsibilities. This section is generally limited to job history and a few key abilities. For example, a candidate may be seeking a management position and a summary statement might discuss how she manages cash flow, accounts receivable and accounts payable. However, if she seeks a higher-level position such as president, she will likely describe her skill set in terms of turning around operations and making strategic and tactical decisions.

All of these sections are important to any resume objective. A candidate’s ability to communicate their skills and experience effectively is what sets them apart from other candidates. However, it is equally important to focus on a candidate’s relevant skills and experience for a particular job. This means that any resume summary statement needs to accurately convey all of a candidate’s most relevant skills and experience listed in their resume.
