Using Resume Examples to Write Your Cover Letters
Resume examples are what many job seekers use to create a well-written curriculum vitae. However, these examples should not be used blindly and without much thought. As a teacher you must deal with about 1,024 priorities at once. So how do you put that all on a resume?
Many resume examples that we find online fall into one of two categories, those that highlight your core competencies or skills and those that highlight your chronological experience (work history). Unfortunately, when it comes to the core competencies or skills section, many of the websites that offer examples make the mistake of omitting important parts of the curriculum vitae. Let’s look at why this is.
The work history on most curriculum vitae examples actually only highlight your educational achievements. This is a big mistake. When you work in a classroom, you learn a lot of things from your teacher – and a teacher is likely to highlight things about you that you may want to take note of and put on your resume. For example, if you were a gifted child educator, your teacher might mention your honors and awards. If you are very organized and your teacher noticed that you always get your work in order, your teacher might tell you about your core competency of the organization.
In the work history section, these examples make the mistake of omitting all information about you that relates to you applying for a particular job. What information does this leave out? It might include work experience, certifications and awards, references and so on. You need to know exactly what you need to include when you are creating a great resume. This includes the chronological experience (even the times you have moved and reapplied) as well as your work history.
One problem with resume examples is that they only give you the tips and tricks for crafting a great one-page cover letter. They do not give you information on how to structure your resume in such a way that will draw attention and make it stand out from the rest. In addition, the examples are usually created by trained HR professionals who know how employers will read your cover letter and figure out what kind of resume you most likely fit. While there are resume templates available, these may not be the best choice.
As I mentioned above, resume examples only give you information on resume format. They do not show you how to customize your template to fit your own job search needs. Why do I say this? Most hiring managers prefer resumes that are very formatted so they can easily skim over them and quickly get an idea of what a candidate is all about.
One of the best sources of resume examples is a library. A good library or guide will contain hundreds (if not thousands) of sample resumes. You can take these samples and use them to modify yours according to your needs. You should not have to pay for the use of these samples; they are usually offered for free. In addition, these resources will also show you how to format the template to fit your specific needs.
