A college resume is just a short snapshot of a young person’s high school accomplishments, activities, work history, extracurricular activities, leadership qualities, academic achievements, and personal characteristics. The focus of the college resume should be directly related to what the student was planning to do in college, who he or she was looking forward to studying with, how much time he or she planned to spend on campus, and which courses he or she hoped to enroll. The objective of the college resume is to make a good impression in the hopes that an employer will consider you for an offer. If you were planning on majoring in Psychology but never had the opportunity to pursue this major, your college resume would focus on your time spent in community service as a teenager. This particular college resume should not be confused with a personal statement that you would write for a letter of admission.
There are four major sections that should comprise your college resume. These are: Education, Special Skills, Personal Character, and Leadership or Work Experience. Your education section should contain all of your academic information which includes your high school grades, any college courses taken, the date you graduated, and your GPA scores. Any letters of recommendation or professional certifications that you have received should also be included. Special skills sections include computer skills, foreign languages, athletic ability, or a history of special education.
Personal Character encompasses everything that you have done in your life that is related to your work and community involvement. High School Activities will show what clubs or classes, you were involved in as a high school student, including special honors done such as winning the state championship, or honors received such as excellence in academics or honors awarded at a business conference. Leadership or work experience sections will show your career goals and accomplishments, or volunteer work if it was relevant. When writing your college resume, these sections are best left to the appropriate section of your curriculum vitae.
Communication skills are essential when writing a college resume since most employers only glance over it briefly. Therefore, you must make sure that your achievements speak for themselves, particularly those that you have earned through volunteer work or other activities. You can list your work experience with relevant keywords, including tasks related to the job you are applying for, volunteer positions you have held, or other achievements that clearly demonstrate your abilities.
Your community service or leadership skills should also be highlighted in your college resume. For instance, volunteerism could include community service while in high school or college, service in the military, or other ways that demonstrate your values and abilities. If you have leadership skills, this section may include a short paragraph about your leadership awards or honors. It is important not to downplay your community service or leadership skills however. Your future employer will not think highly of you if they think you did not mention these.
One of the least utilized sections of your college resume is your ability to communicate. Your admission essays for admission will use a variety of ways to communicate to you, including through personal pronouns, direct questions, statements, and questions that imply some sort of professional connection. It is important that you have at least one good communication skill listed on your college resume. This includes using appropriate language, using clear, simple sentences, using easy vocabulary, and being concise and straightforward in your communication. It also includes using formal and acceptable tone when communicating with someone.
Another area that many college resumes overlook is soft skills. These soft skills, like personality and self-confidence, can be used to show potential employers that you have something unique to offer them. The soft skills that are most important to your future employer are who you are as a person and how you can contribute to their company. These soft skills can include your ability to get along with others, your ability to be tolerant of other’s attitudes, and how your accomplishments show that you are a leader who is not afraid to take risks.
When writing a college student resume, it is important that you think of yourself as an individual who has achieved an education, rather than just another person who got a job. This can make a big different in your college application experience. When you are applying to several colleges, you need to get multiple letters of recommendations. The more letters of recommendation you have, the more likely it is that you will be chosen for an interview.
